Established in 2002, the Oakland Parks, Recreation
& Cultural Arts Department was formed with a vision to strengthen
the
community and provide a quality of life that flourishes with the growth
of the area. Newly appointed Director Christina Jenkins has a strong focus
on providing
recreation programs, leisure opportunities and the development of the
parks system for everyone to enjoy from youngsters to seniors.
In 2006, Oakland received a matching LPRF Grant from the Tennessee
Department of Environment & Conservation to further develop
multi-purpose
sports fields, a toddler playground, public restrooms and concession
stand in Phase I of Cypress Creek Park, on Hwy 194 South, along with
walking
trails in Phase II. That park was dedicated on Saturday, August 23,2008.
The department also oversees three neighborhood city parks, in the
subdivisions of The Oaklands, Northwoods Estates, and
Oakland Woods, which provide walking trails and fishing for area
residents, or a convenient and easily accessible spot for neighbors to
gather
their families for a picnic. The OPRCA department has an outstanding
partnership with the YMCA, which provides the area youth with spring and
fall
soccer, summer baseball and fall flag football programs. The Young
Champions Program, for youth cheerleading has attained national
recognition. The
Department plans frequent events and additional programs throughout the
year, which underscores the town's unwavering commitment to ensure the
citizens of Oakland and the surrounding area have quality programs to
develop both mind and body. The rapidly-growing Senior Adults Group
meets monthly for fellowship, bingo and lunch, as well as for quarterly
events and trips. The Adult Art Group meets twice monthly to create art
and foster friendships with other local artists. Community events, such
as the Easter Egg Hunt, Mother/Daughter Picnic, The Oakland in October
Festival and the Youth Fishing Rodeo are some of the annual events that
provide opportunities for the local businesses and residents to come
together, whether through sponsorships, volunteering or participating,
which strengthens our community.
Community involvement is the key to achieving a high quality of life,
which is the goal of the Oakland Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts
Department. It is what makes Oakland not just a great place to own a
home or start a business, but a great place to live!
